Hello Gorgeous,
New York Fashion Week, Skylight at Clarkson Square, designers, style bloggers, fashionistas… If those words make your heart skip a beat, we like the same things, Gorgeous. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be writing a series about my first-ever NYFW visit this fall.
At first, attending NYFW seemed like an impossible dream unless you are a celebrity, a celebrity stylist, or a blogger with 100K+ followers. It turns out I was thinking about it all wrong!
If you’re a blogger with a smaller following, you can still get an invitation to the designer shows. Preparation takes a lot of work, time, and energy, but attending one of New York’s biggest events in fashion is an awesome reward. Dreams do come true.
Here are some tidbits I learned from my first experience…
The first show I attended at Skylight (one of the main venues) was Taoray Wang, where I quickly learned that the lines to get in are huge. No, really, they are enormous. I also discovered that at larger shows, having an invitation does not guarantee you a seat. At Leanne Marshall‘s show, for instance, the PR company overbooked and about 20 people were left standing outside the room and having to watch the show on a screen. I was one of them. After learning the hard way, I now know to arrive much, much earlier to get in.
Since it was my first time, I limited daily attendance to two or three shows a day. That was the only way I could fully absorb what mattered instead of blazing right past this one-of-a-kind experience. I needed to learn how NYFW works and wanted to be able to focus and absorb at the shows I had been invited to, which I’ll report on in my next blog posts.
The only way to pull off a hectic day during fashion week — where you wait and wait and wait in between shows, and watch and watch and watch fashion history being made — is to prepare in advance. I planned every outfit before leaving the comfort of my closet at home. Knowing what I was going to wear for each show and sticking to the plan saved me a lot of time and anxiety. Contrary to what I first thought, you don’t have to dress to the style of the designer whose show you are going to attend. There was so much style variety around me at those shows! You can wear pretty much anything and fit right in. Unless, of course, if you do have pieces from that particular designer’s collections, you should definitely wear them. The designer will be flattered and everyone will notice.
For the Taoray Wang show at Skylight, I wore this oversized bright pink sweater from H&M with mom jeans that were hand-painted by ThreePigsVintage.com; they are based in Pittsburgh (lucky me!). I accessorized with a pair of ruffled pumps and a red-hot suede purse from Zara. Pink and red are the colors of this season, so is the white color of my kitten heels. If you don’t own those iconic pieces yet, it’s time to shop! All of the items are linked down below.
