Bonne journée, Magnifique!
I am a true Francophile. I’m in love with French cuisine, music, language, and fashion, of course! Some of my favorite fashion houses are French. French people live amidst fashion put out by powerhouse designers, even in the countryside. So my new year’s resolution is to try to learn French.
But before I can talk the talk, I decided to walk the walk. See the video of a Parisian visiting the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania…
While researching the topic, I noticed French women are considered to be stubborn in fashion, wanting to dress as they please. All the French women with their je ne sais quois tend to follow their hearts before they follow the trends. Maybe they learned to disregard fashion because it’s infused into the culture all around them?
Or maybe because French women know that you have to make any fashion trend yours, or it’ll consume you. That’s the version I am going with.
I do think that dressing as you see fit works pretty well for a girl in any city of the world. But who am I to contradict the internet? So Parisian of me!
So here are some ground rules for looking like la Parisienne:
Rule #1: It’s all about the fit. Wear clothes that flatter your body, regardless of trends. If you can’t find the size that works best for you, find one that fits well enough and then find a great tailor.
Rule #2: It’s all about simplicity. Your outfit should be simple, yet chic. As the legendary Coco Chanel is quoted to have said, “once you’ve dressed, and before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take at least one thing off.” As I said, keep it simple.
Rule #3: Dress for yourself and yourself only! Great style is in feeling confident. To quote Coco Chanel one last time, “Elegance does not consist in putting on a new dress.” Dress to feel good, and every pair of eyes that is free for the taking will be yours.
